Old crafts still alive today:

Wood carving

Wood carvingWood carving has a century-old tradition in South Tyrol. The wide offer ranges from statues of Saints to figures of the crib and profane arts. The various workshops and points of sale are definitely worth a visit and represent a good opportunity to gain an insight into this traditional South Tyrolean trade.

Patschenmachen - the art of making felt slippers

Making felt slippers is a very old craftsmanship. Today, only few people are able to manufacture the traditional overshoes. The handwork requires masterly skills, calm and patience. Felt slippers are handmade and it takes about a day to produce a pair of slippers from felt and thread. Even if the carefully produced felt slippers are very popular, the traditional craft technique is threatened with extinction, as only few people are willing to learn the art of making felt slippers.

Klöppeln (Lace-making)

Lace-making is an art with a very long tradition. Beautiful ornamental braids are made by using spindle-shaped wooden bobbins and matching thread spools.
